Fine-Tuning Your Marketing: Tips for Auto Repair Shop Owners in 2023

  1. Setting Goals: Understanding how the goals of a shop/shop-owner will influence the marketing plan.
  2. Setting a Budget: This is a carry on from goal setting. For instance, a shop seeking rapid growth will need to be more aggressive with the budget than a shop that is at capacity. Similarly, competition, population, reputation, and many other factors will influence the best practices of marketing for that specific shop.
  3. Setting Strategy: What are the most important tactics that will help a shop owner to achieve the results that they want? Which forms of marketing move the needle the most for rapid growth? A lot of shop owners are paying for marketing that isn’t the right fit for their shop while missing out on marketing that would be effective.
  4. Setting Metrics: What marketing platforms are customers coming from, and what is the acquisition cost of those customers? If owners have the answers to those questions, they can know how to dial in marketing to be more effective and more efficient.

Your Key To Success: Optimize Your Labor

Optimization of your labor is your future. It’s inevitable that profitability and survivability are going to force us into a more productive business model to thrive and prosper in an industry of constant and unpredictable change. The old model cannot sustain the evolving demands of the collision industry; by focusing on the optimization and utilization of your available skilled labor, your shop can not only survive but thrive.

Why is Labor critical? New technicians are not entering the industry because the work is seen as chaotic and labor-intensive. In an industry where current repair complexities are increasing in an industry with an average touch time of 2.6 labor hours per day, labor improvement is our greatest opportunity. An opportunity not just for profitability but the quality of life that comes with it.

Labor undoubtedly creates the biggest potential profit, typically returning over 60% or our gross margin. A full parking lot without the available labor to complete the work on-time (meet cycle time goals) is a undesirable situation for any collision center.

The Oil Factor: How Savvy Shop Owners Are Using Oil to Make More Money

Being profitable with oil changes is harder than ever. The inconsistency of oil prices and limited availability of products has made providing oil-changing services tough to get excited about. If that wasn't enough, customers have gotten used to oil changes taking 15 minutes or less without getting out of their car.

The savviest shop owners aren't discouraged because they know oil changes shouldn't be a loss leader but a profit driver. In this session, John Eades, with MotorSupplyCo, will show you how to make more money on oil changes while increasing the trust with customers.
